Arthur CARMAN, son of James CARMAN (1858-1942) and Emma COLLINGS (1868-c. 1941), was born on 17 February 1898 in North Lopham, Norfolk - mothers maiden name COLLINGS. Arthur was attested into the army on 30 May 1916 at Norwich and the next day placed on the Army Reserve. On the 5 October he was mobilised and on the 6 October was posted to the Norfolk Regiment, Ser. No. 26600. He transferred to the Machine Gun Corps on 12 December 1916, Ser. No. 82247, and by April 1917 was part of the British Expeditionary Force in France. On 22 October 1917 he received a gun shot wound in the left shoulder. He returned to home soil on 24 October 1917 and had a furlough from 17 to 27 November 1917. He returned to France on 29 March 1918. Arthur was gassed (mild thankfully) on 22 April 1918. He returned home on 1 January 1919 to prepare for demobilisation. On the 11 February 1919 he was transferred to Class "Z" Army Reserve.He died circa 1988 in North Lopham - born 17.02.1898. He was buried there on 18 February 1988 - aged 89 years.
